Hello, and welcome to The Kitchen. This is where you’ll get a peak at how the Sandwiches are made. This is my very first entry. They say the best time to do a kitchen tour is 20 years ago, and the next best time is November 1st.
Here, is a page from my sketchbook. I want to invite you inside of my process.
If you had a look at han samwich presents: a cartoonography, you will have noticed some recurring characters, but no real recurring story line. This is by design, each sandwich is different!
However, the characters need a little more… meat to them. So on this page, I was getting to know them a bit.
Next, we have this page. I started to dig to the meaning a bit more. I was dabbling with the idea of the Angel and the Devil on the shoulders like in the cartoons. I thought, maybe Sven and Giorgio are that. I also decided on this day, I wanted to distinguish them from reality. They are a figment of Ham’s imagination. They are not real, they are her perception of reality. So, I display the reality in black, and the perception in pink. Think like, the conversations you have with yourself inside your head. Giorgio and Sven are those thoughts, feelings emotions personified (or… creature-ified?)
Here, well, the “what if”s swarm around like flies. Because, isn’t this how it feels sometimes? I incorporated the pink and black distinctions like before and I combined Giorgio and Sven’s… heckling, basically with some contrasting thoughts from Ham. You know, an attempt to redirect.
It’s all sparked by a seemingly un-provoking and innocent question, but sometimes these feel more loaded Inside than in Reality. It feels like there is a right and wrong answer and there is a mental battle with Sven and Giorgio to find the right one.
Here is where we ended up. I won’t explain it away, I think the narrative below speaks for itself.
Until next time,
Han Sandwich
P.S. Why yes, that is my very own font Samwich25 featured on the final narrative…
